getready is a tool to help parents and children get ready for school or bed, but can be used by anyone who wants to refine their time-management skills.
Benefits include:
Children feel ownership in planning their routines.
Children learn to break down complex tasks into manageable chunks.
Children learn about how time and their activities are related.
Instead of parents harrying their children or pointing to the clock (which may be too abstract for the child to understand), children make a game of beating the timer as it moves past the pictures.
Children discover a technique for planning which can be applied to other activities in life.
Children learn to make the connection between planning and rewards (i.e. free time).
Tips for parents:
This is only a tool and does not absolve the parent of responsibility. Up front, it may create more work for the parent, but if properly implemented, the rewards are worth it.
Introduce getready to your child well before you intend to use it.
Spend time configuring and personalizing it with your child. Allow them to make choices about everything.
If possible, take pictures of your child performing the activities listed. Better yet, get them to draw the pictures.
Help your children time themselves, and ask them how much time they think they should allot for each activity.
Create a different routine file (SAVE) for each child and each event.
How-to:
Change the hour and minute fields beside "i need to be ready by" to suit your needs.
Click on a task's title to edit the title, alloted time, and the internet address (URL) of the image. Find images online; if using a search engine, make sure you click "View Image" and then select the whole URL from your browser's location bar. The URL should end with ".jpg", ".jpeg", ".png", ".gif", or some such image file extension. Paste the URL into the third field of the edit window. You can also copy files from your device. These will be stored in you browser's web storage; be aware that they will be deleted if you clear your cache.
To get out of a pop-up window (like this one), click anywhere else.
Click on a task's "X" to delete the task.
Click "new task" to create a new task and choose where to insert it.
Once you have created a routine, save it. A shortcut to the routine will appear in the top right corner of your screen. Do this any time you make changes. getready uses web storage; be aware that unsaved changes will be lost if you clear your cache.
Use "manage routines" to restore one of the default routines or to delete routines you created and saved yourself.
Click the "Donate" button if you like getready. Send comments and suggestions to paul@paulrobert.ca.
Questions and answers:
Q: Do you store my information? Can other people see my routine? A: No. All of your configuration information is stored in your browser's web storage, and in any routine files you email to yourself. The only exception is with images, which must already be on the internet before you can use them. This may be changed soon.
Q: Why use routine files for saving? A: Using routine files means no login, no username, no password, no two-step verification etc. It also means none of your information is stored online. Saving routine files in emails also means that they're easy to share.
Q: Why are the images in black and white? A: That's a design choice.
